There is a new player in the international silver trade. My Family Silver is a revolutionary new website that offers a unique way to buy and sell antique silver.
For the first time, myfamilysilver.com enables dealers and auctioneers worldwide to list silver for sale on one exclusive and fully independent platform dedicated to silver. Visitors will be able to rapidly explore thousands of items and search for silver by maker, date, type, engraved crest and initials.
The founder, Martyn Downer, has a wealth of experience in the antiques trade. His father was an auctioneer whilst he gained his own expertise in the industry at Hancocks, the famed West End dealers in silver and jewellery, before moving to Sotheby’s where he was head of jewellery in London. To the wider trade, he is perhaps best known for unearthing a remarkable trove of treasures relating to Lord Nelson which were sold at auction in 2002 for over £2m. Martyn subsequently published a bestselling account of his dream discovery entitled “Nelson’s Purse”.
My Family Silver directly introduces potential buyers to sellers, transforming the way antique and contemporary silver is bought and sold. All the exhibitors are promoted by name with their listings branded by logo and full contact details including web address. If a visitor is interested in an item of silver on the site, a request can be made for the seller to provide further details by email or phone. A purchase can then be made by direct communication with the seller who is responsible for fulfilling the order. myfamilysilver.com is not party to any transactions and takes no commission on purchases resulting from an introduction.
An exciting and innovative feature on the website is the Crestfinder function. Using a digital version of ”Fairbairns Book of Crests”, this newly constructed database enables visitors to search for silver engraved with their family crest. If an item of silver with the crest is not currently available, visitors can leave a search request. myfamilysilver.com will constantly scan newly posted items until the request is fulfilled.
In addition, exhibitors have exclusive access to the website’s unique Crest Identifier service. This enables them to easily identify crests engraved on silver before promoting it to entitled families. For instance, a commonly encountered crest such as a demi-lion rampant is shared by 228 surnames (Crestfinder has details of over 47,000 families). For the first time, sellers can maximise the potential of crest engraved silver and introduce it to a new international market.
